NEVER SAY NO TO PANDA.

Midnight Shred Video

No matter what else is going on Longboarding always makes sense. I just went for a couple of runs down Blackness Ave. just got back and I can’t really concentrate on anything meaningful, so I made this tiny video.

Day 63: Dissertation Progress

I’m on the train just now so I thought I’d try out the wordpress app for the first time to write a little bit about my dissertation progress. Mainly to clarify in my own head where I’m going with it next.
Yesterday I had a real breakthrough, smashing through the first chapter. It doesn’t yet have a title, but it centres around the idea of collecting and how it is part of the human condition wanting to collect to some extent. I have used the example of Maslow’s famous hierarchy of need and then linked this back to why I believe collecting impacts our lives socially, personally, and through self actualisation. The latter is probably turning out to be what the point of my dissertation is about. The idea that collecting can intrinsically be linked to how we perceive ourselves and how we want to be perceived by others.
So the next chapter, hmm. Well I’m going to go onto the research I’ve done using three specific examples and then trying to link these up to the 4 distinct types of collector and back to the ideas I’ve mentioned in the first chapter. I’m not sure if this will work, but it seems like a good idea at the moment.
Then it’s conclusion time! Woop! Yea so I think I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it… I still have 23 days and at the moment I’m pretty happy, definitely a key week though, got to keep the pressure on.

Thought I’d put in a picture to see if it works. This is the set up of our VJ, Butcher from Friday night’s DISCOTECH. He uses three VCRs and mashes them together with an 80s broadcast mixer, has to be seen to be believed!

Pogomix

Over the past couple of days a few different people have brought the work of Pogo, an Australian DJ/Remixer/Producer to my attention. He makes new songs by using vocal samples, musical chords and sound effects from films. These are three are my favourite:

Wishery

Alice

Upular

Enjoy.

Cheers for the heads up, Adam and Will

Crank Brothers: Beautifully Designed Bike Components

I am not a cyclist myself, but I can really appreciate the design of these bike parts.

Digital Footprint

So after many hours of editing and rendering. My video is finished.

This video was completed just in time for ideas day, on friday the 5th of November 2010. The day consisted of showing both our insights and ideas to friends of the course from industry. Researchers from companies such as Microsoft and Nokia attended to see our progress thus far.

It was a great day and I was very pleased with the feedback I gained. I still have a ton of work to do though, but I reckon that’s only a good thing.

Thanks go to Fraze and Navid for filming, Cheers!

Also the whole thing wouldn’t have been possible without Andrew Kramers After Effects Tutorials. Absolutely essential. Check them out here.

Check my last post for the inspiration behind the vid.

Enjoy.

Magic Flashlights: More difficult than I thought!

I’m not sure if anyone has seen this before, but the effect here is the one I am trying to duplicate for my video due on Friday. I am trying to show the trails of light as the G.P.S. data many of us leaving lying around unwittingly.

This is probably one of the stupidest things i’ve ever tried to do. It is almost impossible to get this effect to work properly. I have a couple of scenes almost ready and once these are done then i’ll be feeling a bit happier about the whole thing. I’ll be posting the whole video later in the week, so have a look and let me know what you think. I’ve been meaning to post more, and this week I will be! (Mainly due to 15 minute render times!).
